The Backyard Farmer Has Evolved into Marin Backyard Habitats

While we enjoyed a loyal and enthusiastic following, the Fairfax Backyard Farmer closed our doors last fall after 7 years of business due to financial shortfalls.

Now, we are excited to chart our return in a new form: Marin Backyard Habitats, a service program dedicated to many of the issues that the Backyard Farmer previously supported, primarily the enlivening of our backyards as healthy ecosystems supporting the health of people and wildlife

The foundation of healthy backyard habitat begins with supporting local native plantings. Click Here to review our searchable Marin Local Native Plant Guide listing

A Call to Action: Transforming Backyards, Transforming the Planet

The health of our planet starts right here, in our backyards.

As the global environmental crisis worsens, The time to act is now.!

We invite you to place your own hands into the work of land stewardship by committing to take simple but important steps in your own backyard to improve the ecological health of your home, your neighborhood, your community and the planet.

As our national government retreats from responsible environmental stewardship, we are inviting you to renew your personal commitment to land stewardship in your own backyard.

This is an opportunity to lead by example and confirm our environmental values for ourselves, our neighbors and those who will come after us

A Proven model of mentorship
We are modeling our developing Marin program on the highly successful Backyard Habitat Certification Program serving the greater Portland, Oregon area.

The Portland program has enrolled thousands of active local participants by offering in-person guidance, mentorship, training, certification, and incentives to residents to increase native plants and reduce invasive plants and pollution while creating backyard wildlife habitat corridors across neighborhoods.

The initial and ongoing support offered to participants through the Portland program is key to their success and is what separates them from other ‘self-guided’ backyard habitat programs, which are often unable to create such sustained participation

creating the marin backyard habitat program

Our goal for Marin is to build a local non-profit organization to administer the Marin Backyard Habitat program to provide onsite evaluations of your backyard’s soil health, water management, plant life, and wildlife habitats.

With tailored advice and practical tools, we’ll help you make small yet meaningful changes to your yard—changes that can create a habitat ripple effect, connecting your backyard to your neighbors’ spaces and the wildlands and open spaces surrounding the many unique neighborhoods in Marin.

Collective Action: The Power of Connected Communities
This work isn’t just about individual backyards—it’s about collective impact. Our program aims to unite participants on a street-by-street and neighborhood-wide scale, amplifying the benefits of shared action. Together, we can establish continuous wildlife habitat corridors, pesticide-free zones, water-smart and fire-smart plantings, and yards free of invasive plants that harm ecosystems.

The urgency couldn’t be clearer. Local actions can drive global change and every backyard matters. By coming together, we can help heal the planet, one habitat at a time.

Be Part of the Movement for a Healthier Future
Will you join us in making a difference today—for our community, for our wildlife, and for future generations?
